CINDY & TERRY YOUR DANCE INSTRUCTORS
Cindy Gardner has taught Swing Dance in the Twin Cities since 1979. Trained in ballet, jazz and ballroom, she focuses her talents on swing dance because, Its the most fun, creative, inventive and energetic of the social dances. Its roots are in American history, and its great for social interaction, self-expression and aerobic activity." With tens of thousands of students to her credit, Cindy has trained with numerous internationally renowned dancers, has taught with Lindy Hop master Frankie Manning, and is a national level judge for the American Lindy Hop Championships.
Terry Gardner is a Swing DJ, competitive dancer, instructor and creator of TCSwing.com, Minnesota's most popular swing website. Thanks in large part to his dad, he grew up listening to traditional big band music. He has always had a love for the music, but didn't have a clue that there was a dance especially for it until early 1997, when he started taking lessons from Cindy and discovered that he's a natural on the wood.
TC Swing Cindy & Terry have teamed to provide great instruction and connections to the swing dance scene! Their understanding of partnered movement and upbeat, easy teaching style have made them popular instructors, reaching hundreds of students in classes and workshops. Check below for more information on their great beginner, intermediate and advanced lessons held throughout the Twin Cities.
OUR FOCUS - YOUR GOALS
Swing Dance is a fun, playful partnered dance that grew from its roots in the ballrooms of Harlem in the 1920's to its current status as a popular, original American social dance. Its many styles and forms reflect its colorful history of development across the country and through several eras. In our classes you can learn Lindy Hop, the original form of the dance, and East Coast (6-count) Swing, which today is the most prevalent form and the most adaptable to different swing music styles including Big Band, Jump Blues, Jazz, early Rock 'n' Roll, Cajun, Country Western and more. For you as a social dancer, we want you to attain the ability to go out on the social dance floor with comfort and confidence, to enjoy the dance with any number of different partners, and to have a great time. We focus our classes in three areas:
- teaching fun, popular dance steps and figures, and breaking them down so
theyre easy to understand and achievable.
- building strong social lead-&-follow skills, with good movement and partnering techniques.
- adding your own personal styling, and dancing to the music.
HOW IT WORKS
It's always best to pace yourself - you know how you learn best, whether it's lots of new information all at once, or a little at a time. The cost is the same, because our "come when you can" classes are taught on a drop-in basis, with a single fee at the door. You just pay once and stay for as little or as much as you want!
For New Dancers, we recommend that you try one of the Basics classes held the first week of each month on Thursday at Social Dance Studio in Minneapolis. Once you've done that lesson, you can try one of the sequences classes that are held the rest of the month. If those lessons seem too difficult right away, you can better develop your skills and prepare yourself with the 7-week progressive Foundation-Building classes held on Mondays through the Roseville Community Education.
For Dancers with Some Experience, our weekly lessons held Thursdays feature East Coast Swing and Lindy Hop sequences that are tiered so you can choose your own level of difficulty. For example, if you still have to think hard about doing the basic footwork of Lindy Hop, you might find that "Easy East Coast" will suit you fine and "Ambitious East Coast" is great for an added challenge and as Lindy Hop prep, but "Lindy Hop Sequences" may have to wait until that basic footwork comes more naturally.
Experienced Lindy Hoppers who want to learn some of the finer points of the dance will enjoy our periodic Lindy Hop workshops.
We recommend that if you're not ready to work at a particular level, feel free to sit and watch the next portion of class -- but don't bite off more than you can chew! It ends up actually slowing down your learning process to try to get too much information in, and it's not fair to others who are truly ready to work at a more advanced level. Most of all, come prepared to have a good time and lots of fun dancing!
