Workshop Descriptions

BEN & SHERI

Lindy Hop Permutations   (Beg/Int – Int)  This is one of Ben and Sheri’s favorite classes to teach.  Not only will you double and triple the moves you know, you will learn important concepts you can apply right away to continue to mix and match what you know to create more and more combinations.

Lindy Hop Patterns  (Beg/Int – Int)  Rock your lindy hop repertoire with cool sequences that give your dancing lots of great options, plus a strong focus on lead/follow technique to go along with all the variations you learn in this class.

20s Solo Charleston Routine  (All, Int – Int/Adv)  A great way to increase your styling and musicality is to learn and practice solo jazz movements.  And learning this 20’s Solo Charleston Routine is a fun way to do it!  You’ll learn a lot of great 20’s jazz movements and then have a chance to repeat them over and over in the routine. Bring a towel, change of shirt, and be ready for a workout!

Dips & Tricks  (Int)  Make your Lindy more dynamic with dips and tricks!  These dips and tricks and contrast and flash to your dancing.  Plus they are (mostly) dance floor friendly and (mostly) socially leadable!  There is a lot of upper arm connection in dips/tricks so consider bringing a long sleeve t-shirt.

Performance Routine (2-part)  (Int/Adv – Adv, Partner Required)  Group dynamics on a dance floor allow for many combinations of movement and shape creation.  For this year’s routine Ben and Sheri plan to take advantage of these possibilities!  Experts in performance and choreography as a couple and within a group, this routine will include fun moves and choreography (which we invite you to perform for the dance later that night!)

Competition Concepts  (Int – Adv)  If you’re a competitor, a would-be competitor, a fan of competitions, curious about how competitions are judged or run, or just curious why that couple you thought should win first didn’t, then come to this class.  With years of experience in competing, judging, taking judging workshops, etc. we will answer your questions through discussion and also example.  Including Mock Jack And Jill.  Come participate or just spectate!

It’s A Jam Circle!  (Int – Adv)  The fast music comes on.  It’s time for a jam circle!  You’ve seen them.  You may have been in a few yourself!  In this class we will go over concepts for participating in a jam and planning your “jammy” moves.  And we’ll even hold our own jam circle!

Lindy Hop: Milking the Moments   (Int/Adv – Adv)  Learn to add an element of dancing that people don’t often do:  slow down and milk the moments and the music.  In addition to executing fancy moves and hitting breaks, this class teaches  extending highs and lows and even how to move through breaks as a third (and very cool) option.

Musicality 99  (All)  You have just had a weekend full of techniques, moves, patterns, and combinations.  Let’s circle it back to what is great about swing dancing: the music!  We’ll teach some elementary musical concepts and show you how to apply them to your dancing!  A great class for any dancer at any level who wants to bring it back to the music.

DAVID & CAROL

Lindy Hop:  Technique  (Int/Adv – Adv)  How many styles of swing-outs have you learned?  How many do you really understand?  This class will clarify concepts such as Round, Slot, Whips, Circles, etc. and focus on the technique that makes different variations work well on the social floor.

Musicality  (Int – Adv)  Well beyond learning moves, musicality focuses on fitting the movement to the music without losing your great lead-&-follow partnered dancing.  Learn how you can effectively intertwine your dancing with the music.

Choreography  (Int – Adv)  Once you’ve fine-tuned how you listen and respond to the music, learn how to create choreography that not only “fits” the music but actually takes it to the next step, heightening the moods, dynamics and emotions expressed in the music.

Lindy Hop:  Cool Moves  (Int – Adv)  Spice it up with truly amazing figures that will turn your dancing from common to cool!

Big Apple, Frankie’s Routine (2-part)  (All)  Learn Frankie’s acclaimed Big Apple routine, danced by Lindy Hoppers everywhere!

Lindy Hop:  Frankie’s Stuff  (Int)  Your Lindy Hop repertoire isn’t complete without a working knowledge of figures that are characteristic of the renowned Frankie Manning.

Partnered Charleston Basics  (Beg – Int)  This is an introduction of Charleston movement for Lindy Hop (not 20s Charleston), basic figures, and how to incorporate them into Lindy Hop.

Cool Charleston Combos  (Int – Int/Adv)  Learn short sequences that are super fun and can be socially lead and followed.

Charleston Footwork Variations  (Int – Adv)  Kick it up a notch!  Still Charleston, still tons of fun, but definitely more challenging!

What Level Should I Choose?
Lead-follow balance will be maintained in all workshops.

Sign up early to get your first choices!

Workshop levels reflect the difficulty of material presented and the pace at which it’s taught. Ratings refer to the particular dance style — a more experienced Lindy Hopper may find a beginning Tap Dance class to be just right. Students who are struggling in more advanced levels may be directed to change to another session at the instructors’ discretion. Pace yourself and choose those sessions that best meet your particular needs.

All Levels (All)
Workshop content will benefit dancers at all levels.

Beginning (Beg )
For those very new to a dance style. Teaching will be slow to moderate to allow for good understanding of concepts.

Intermediate (Int)
For those comfortable with the basics (you don’t count when you dance!) and who learn simple moves easily, but need time to work on complex figures and concepts. Moderately-paced.

Intermediate/Advanced (Int/Adv)
For those who’ve been dancing a particular style for several months, who are comfortable with rhythm and footwork variations, and who learn at a moderate to quick pace.

Advanced (Adv)
For those who’ve been dancing a particular style at least a year, who enjoy rhythm and footwork variations, who like a good challenge and who learn fast. Not for the timid!

Do I Need A Partner?

No partners are necessary for this weekend and all classes will rotate partners, except where noted [P] for a few “partner-only” sessions. You must find your own partner for these sessions, and partners will not rotate. Register early to secure your spot!
