Peggy Lee Travlin
Light
2000 Capitol Jazz
The Band:
In 1949, her stardom established,
Peggy Lee and husband-guitarist Dave Barbour's Quartet recorded the last of an ongoing
series of transcriptions (recordings made solely for radio airplay) for Capitol Records.
Drawing from her onstage repertoire, the loose, easygoing performances that comprise
Trav'lin' Light reflected her total familiarity with the material. ---
Amazon.com Editorial Review
This CD may not pack a wallop of all
swing dance tunes but Peggy Lees vocals are smooth and sultry thatll get you
in the groove whether you are slow dancing to As Long as Im Dreamin or
swingin to Goody Goody, youll love it because Lee floats through each
song with her distinctive voice.
Nothing on this CD is gonna get you to
break out your fast lindy, however, there is enough on this CD to warrant adding it to
your library. Lee takes her favorite songs
from her idol, Billie Holiday, and puts them together for this CD (well, Michael Cuscuna
gets the credit for the compilation).
This has top notch musicians that take
you in to the 40s and 50s jazz clubs with their laid back rhythms, complimenting Lee the
whole gig. This is both a great listening CD
and a pretty good dance CD.
So, what can you dance to? How about some favorites like Goody Goody, I
Aint Got Nobody and Somebody Loves Me.
Less familiar tunes for dancing include Save Your Sorrow for Tomorrow,
Taint So, Honey, Taint So and Fine and Dandy.
You are going to hear some fine jazz
that will make you say, This is why I like jazz. So grab a scotch or bourbon, light up your Padron
and take yourself back to the day when a jazz clubs were where you could be a mans
man.
